Archival Overview

Hannibal Barca's premier cavalry officer who harassed Roman communications, captured hundreds of Roman cavalry after Cannae, and served as chief of garrison at Tarentum.

Biographical Record

Carthalo was one of Hannibal Barca's most trusted cavalry generals during the invasion of Italy. In the aftermath of the Battle of Cannae (216 BC), Hannibal dispatched Carthalo with an escort of cavalry to Rome to offer terms of ransom for Roman prisoners, which the Roman Senate famously refused.

Carthalo continued to lead fast-moving cavalry detachments throughout Apulia and Calabria. When Roman general Quintus Fabius Maximus recaptured Tarentum in 209 BC through treachery, Carthalo surrendered his sword, but was slain on the spot by Roman legionaries.
