Carroll Hall Shelby (1923–2012) was an American automotive legend and Le Mans champion. Winning the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans co-driving an Aston Martin DBR1 with Roy Salvadori, heart problems forced his retirement from the cockpit shortly thereafter.

Shelby then founded Shelby American, engineering the legendary AC Cobra, Daytona Coupe, and teaming with Ford to develop the GT40 that famously vanquished Ferrari at Le Mans from 1966 to 1969. His muscle car tuning legacy with the Shelby Mustang remains an enduring pillar of American motoring culture.
