Archival Overview
Trailblazing Black Nova Scotian journalist who founded The Clarion in 1946, publicizing Viola Desmond's arrest, and hosted the radio program The Quiet Corner for twenty-five years.
Biographical Record
In 1941, Carrie Best and her son were arrested for sitting in the whites-only section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. When her legal challenge was dismissed, she recognized the urgent need for an independent Black press, founding The Clarion in 1946, the first Black-owned newspaper in Nova Scotia.
Best courageously publicized Viola Desmond's case, rallying public solidarity across North America. In 1952, she launched her popular radio show, The Quiet Corner, broadcasting commentary on civil rights and literature across the Maritimes for a quarter-century, later honored as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
