Archival Overview
Nineteenth-century humanitarian known as 'The Emigrant's Friend' who provided shelter, employment, and protection for thousands of destitute young female migrants and families in colonial Australia.
Biographical Record
Caroline Chisholm was born on May 30, 1808, in Northamptonshire. Marrying Captain Archibald Chisholm of the East India Company, she moved to Sydney in 1838. Shocked by the plight of young, unemployed female immigrants living homeless on the wharves of Sydney, she persuaded Governor Gipps to grant her use of a vermin-infested government storehouse.
Chisholm established the Female Immigrants Home in 1841, providing safe shelter, literacy instruction, and rural employment placements for over 11,000 women. Later traveling into the bush with wagon-trains to settle migrant families, she established the Family Colonisation Loan Society in London. Her portrait featured on Australia's first five-dollar note.
