Biographical Record
Carlos Chavez (1899–1978) was the central architect of 20th-century Mexican musical life. In 1928, he founded the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mexico (later OSN), directing it for two decades, and established the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) in 1947.
His 1935 'Sinfonia India' (Symphony No. 2) integrated authentic Yaqui, Cora, and Seri indigenous melodies and percussion instruments (including water drums and rasping sticks) into a dynamic modernist symphonic structure, performed by major orchestras worldwide.
