Archival Overview
Two-time President of Venezuela (1974–1979 and 1989–1993) who nationalized the Venezuelan petroleum industry and survived two 1992 coup attempts led by Hugo Chávez.
Biographical Record
Carlos Andrés Pérez joined the social democratic Democratic Action party in his youth and served as Minister of the Interior in the 1960s. During his first presidential term (1974–1979), high oil prices fueled massive state spending and the nationalization of oil (creating PDVSA) and iron industries, earning Venezuela the moniker 'Gran Venezuela'.
Elected again in 1988, Pérez confronted economic crisis with IMF-backed austerity measures that sparked the 1989 Caracazo riots. In 1992, he survived two violent military coup attempts, including one launched by Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chávez, before being impeached on corruption charges in 1993.
