Biographical Record
Carl Michael Bellman was born on February 4, 1740, in Södermalm, Stockholm. A virtuoso on the cittern and an inimitable vocal mimic, his bohemian tavern life under King Gustav III inspired a revolutionary literary synthesis.
Bellman created a totally unique poetic universe: setting exquisite, intricate rococo verses to borrowed melodies from French opéra-comique, military marches, and Lutheran hymns. His masterpieces, Fredmans epistlar (1790) and Fredmans sånger (1791), populated Stockholm's taverns with memorable characters—clockmaker Jean Fredman, tavern beauty Ulla Winblad, and drunkard Movitz—oscillating between ecstatic Dionysian revelry and the hovering presence of Death. He remains universally revered as Sweden's supreme musical poet.
