Biographical Record
Carl Larsson was born on May 28, 1853, in the desolate slums of Gamla Stan, Stockholm. Overcoming extreme childhood hardship, he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts at age thirteen, working as a caricature artist and graphic illustrator.
In 1882, living in the Scandinavian artists' colony at Grez-sur-Loing in France, Larsson abandoned oils for transparent watercolors and met his artist wife Karin Bergöö. Moving to Karin's father's cottage, Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, Dalarna, the couple created a bright, colorful Arts and Crafts domestic sanctuary. Larsson's watercolor album Ett Hem (A Home, 1899) and Spadarvet depicted their children, domestic warmth, and rustic joy, shaping international design from Scandinavian furniture to modern family lifestyle.
