Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi (1804–1851) was the first Jewish scholar appointed to a full professorship at a German university (Konigsberg). In 1829, he published 'Fundamenta Nova Theoriae Functionum Ellipticarum', revolutionizing mathematical analysis through inverse functions of elliptic integrals.
His formulation of functional determinants (Jacobians) became indispensable in multivariable calculus. In theoretical mechanics, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation provided the ultimate canonical transformation theory, later serving as the direct stepping stone to Erwin Schrodinger's wave mechanics.
