Titan of 19th-century Danish industry and finance who founded Privatbanken, DFDS shipping, Tuborg brewery, and GN Store Nord, laying telegraph cables across Europe and Asia.
Biographical Record
Carl Frederik Tietgen was born on March 19, 1829, in Odense, the son of a poor carpenter. After five years in Manchester learning modern British commercial banking, he returned to Copenhagen and founded Privatbanken in 1857 at age twenty-eight, introducing modern credit and investment banking to Denmark.
Tietgen was the supreme architect of Danish industrialization, orchestrating the creation of the United Steamship Company (DFDS), the Tuborg Brewery, the Danish Sugar Factories (De Danske Sukkerfabrikker), and the Great Northern Telegraph Company (GN Store Nord), which laid the first submarine telegraph cables connecting Europe with China and Japan. He financed the completion of Copenhagen's Marble Church (Marmorkirken) from his personal fortune.
