Archival Overview
Visionary Norwegian master mariner and explorer who captained the Antarctic during Nordenskjöld's Swedish Antarctic Expedition and founded the Grytviken settlement in South Georgia.
Biographical Record
Carl Anton Larsen was born on August 7, 1860, in Østre Halsen, Tjølling. Going to sea at age fourteen, he became one of Norway's most skilled Arctic ice pilots and whaling captains. In 1892, commanding the Jason, he explored the Antarctic Peninsula and discovered the Larsen Ice Shelf, which bears his name.
In 1901–1903, he captained Otto Nordenskjöld's vessel Antarctic; when the ship was crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea, Larsen skillfully led his crew across the floes to Paulet Island, where they survived an entire winter in a stone shelter. In 1904, Larsen established the world's southernmost settlement at Grytviken on South Georgia, revolutionizing polar navigation and industry.
