Cardinal Jules Mazarin was an Italian-born French cardinal, diplomat, and politician who served as the chief minister of the French monarchs Louis XIII and Louis XIV from 1642 until his death in 1661. Succeeding Richelieu, Mazarin concluded the Peace of Westphalia, defeated the aristocratic rebellion of the Fronde, and laid the foundations for Louis XIV's glorious reign.
