"Painting is the art of making stone breathe under the light of heaven."

Archival Overview

Foremost Venetian veduta (view) painter whose sparkling, geometrically precise paintings of the Grand Canal and London palaces defined the visual souvenir of the Grand Tour.

Biographical Record

Canaletto (1697–1768 CE) trained under his father painting theatrical scenery before pioneering the veduta genre in Venice alongside consul Joseph Smith.

Using the camera obscura to draft exacting architectural perspectives, his sun-drenched canvases of the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, and the Thames captured glistening water and lively gondoliers with incomparable clarity.
