Archival Overview
Passionate revolutionary journalist and orator who leaped onto a café table at the Palais-Royal on July 12, 1789, crying 'Aux armes!', sparking the storming of the Bastille two days later.
Biographical Record
A stammering young lawyer from Guise whose speech became electric when impassioned, Desmoulins co-founded the radical Cordeliers Club with Georges Danton. His fiery pamphlets, including La France libre and Révolutions de France et de Brabant, made him the voice of popular insurrection.
Elected to the National Convention, he initially voted for the King's death, but repented during the Terror. In December 1793, he launched the newspaper Le Vieux Cordelier, courageously calling for a 'Committee of Clemency' to halt the guillotine. Denounced by Robespierre, he was arrested with Danton and executed on the scaffold.
