Biographical Record

The son of a respected Malinke blacksmith and goldsmith, Camara Laye (1928–1980) studied engineering in Conakry and Paris. In 1953, while working in a Parisian car factory, he published 'L'Enfant noir', a lyrical autobiographical celebration of traditional African childhood, forge mysticism, and maternal devotion.

His 1954 novel 'Le Regard du roi' ('The Radiance of the King') inverted colonial narratives by portraying an arrogant white man wandering through an African kingdom seeking redemption. Opposing the totalitarian regime of Sekou Toure, Laye lived his final decades in exile in Senegal.
