Archival Overview
18th-century naval governor and master shipwright of Cherchell who revived the ancient Caesarean maritime shipyards and guarded the central Algerian coast.
Biographical Record
Caid Kaddour was an influential naval commander and civic governor of the maritime port of Cherchell during the eighteenth century. Recognizing Cherchell's ancient strategic value dating back to Roman Caesarea, he oversaw the reconstruction of the harbor mole and established specialized timber sawmills in the cedar forests of the Ouarsenis to supply naval yards.
Under his command, Cherchell produced fast light chebecs and brigantines that patrolled the coast against British and Spanish warships. Caid Kaddour also sponsored local religious schools and endowed maritime charities that supported families of missing sailors.
