Archival Overview
Revered as 'the Father of Danish Painting' who studied under Jacques-Louis David in Paris and taught an entire generation of Golden Age artists to paint directly from nature with optical precision.
Biographical Record
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was born on January 2, 1783, in Blåkrog, southern Jutland. Winning the Royal Academy's Grand Gold Medal, he studied in Paris under neoclassical titan Jacques-Louis David from 1810 to 1813, followed by three formative years in Rome sketching classical ruins in open-air daylight.
Appointed Professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1818, Eckersberg transformed Danish painting. He introduced open-air field studies, exact linear perspective, and meticulous marine painting, personally mentoring Golden Age giants Christen Købke, Martinus Rørbye, J.T. Lundbye, and Wilhelm Bendz before succumbing to Copenhagen's 1853 cholera outbreak.
