Biographical Record
Clarence Decatur Howe was an MIT-trained civil engineer who moved to Canada to design massive terminal grain elevators across the prairies. Entering Mackenzie King's cabinet in 1935, Howe earned the legendary moniker "Minister of Everything" for his driving corporate efficiency and state-building power.
Howe created Trans-Canada Air Lines (later Air Canada) in 1937, reorganized the Canadian National Railways, and founded the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). During World War II, as Minister of Munitions and Supply, Howe performed miracles of industrial mobilization, turning Canada into the world's fourth-largest industrial power and producer of aircraft, tanks, and synthetic rubber.
