Archival Overview
Prominent Kurdish-Iraqi modernist poet of the Baghdad Pioneer generation whose minimalist verse explored urban alienation and exile.
Biographical Record
Buland al-Haidari was born in Baghdad into an aristocratic Kurdish family from Sulaymaniyah. A foundational member of the post-WWII Iraqi modernist avant-garde alongside Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Nazik al-Malaika, he forged a distinctively lean, existential poetic voice stripped of rhetorical excess.
His collections, including Clay and Pulsation (1946) and Steps in Exile (1965), captured the angst, dislocation, and longing of the displaced Middle Eastern intellectual under authoritarian regimes. Haidari also served as a premier art critic, championing Iraqi modern painters and sculptors across the Arab diaspora.
