Archival Overview
Foremost wildlife painter of Scandinavia whose dramatic canvases of foxes, sea eagles, and capercaillies pioneered ecological realism, portraying animals unsentimentally in their primal habitats.
Biographical Record
Bruno Andreas Liljefors was born on May 14, 1860, in Uppsala. A passionate gymnast, huntsman, and keen naturalist, he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts before joining the artists' colony at Grez-sur-Loing in France.
Unlike Victorian painters who anthropomorphized animals, Liljefors depicted nature with absolute scientific fidelity and Darwinian realism, capturing the raw drama of predator and prey in the Swedish archipelago and forests. Masterpieces such as A Fox Family (1886) and Sea Eagles Mating combined Japanese decorative flattening, impressionist light, and biological intimacy. Alongside Zorn and Larsson, he formed the triumvirate of Sweden's National Romantic painting golden age.
