Archival Overview
British-American astronomer who served as director of the Minor Planet Center for nearly three decades, specializing in calculating orbits of comets and near-Earth asteroids.
Biographical Record
Brian Marsden graduated from New College, Oxford, and earned his doctorate in astronomy from Yale University. In 1965, he joined the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, taking charge of celestial mechanics calculations.
From 1978 to 2006, Marsden directed the Minor Planet Center under the International Astronomical Union. He gained global renown for calculating accurate orbital trajectories for lost comets, detecting hazardous near-Earth asteroids, and leading scientific discussions that culminated in Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet.
Key Life Milestones
Director of the Minor Planet Center
Assumed leadership of the international body responsible for collecting and computing planetary and cometary orbital observations.
