"A debt minus zero is a debt; a fortune minus zero is a fortune; zero minus zero is zero. When fortune is subtracted from zero, it becomes a debt."

Archival Overview

Genius astronomer and mathematician who formulated the mathematical rules of zero (shunya) as a number, operations with negative numbers, and the Brahmagupta formula for cyclic quadrilaterals.

Biographical Record

Brahmagupta (598–c. 668 CE) directed the premier astronomical observatory of classical India in Ujjain. In his 628 CE masterwork, the Brahmasphutasiddhanta ('Correctly Established Doctrine of Brahma'), he established the foundational rules of modern arithmetic.

He was the first mathematician in history to treat zero not merely as a placeholder, but as a legitimate number in its own right, articulating clear rules for addition, subtraction, and multiplication with zero and negative numbers (*debt* and *fortune*). His formula for the area of a cyclic quadrilateral and solution to the indeterminate equation $Nx^2 + 1 = y^2$ (Pell's equation) were centuries ahead of Europe.

Key Life Milestones
