Biographical Record
Boumezrag El Mokrani belonged to the illustrious aristocratic house of the Amokrane of the Medjana plateau. When his brother Cheikh El Mokrani launched the massive 1871 uprising against French colonial rule, Boumezrag took command of the southern tribal armies.
Following his brother's martyrdom in May 1871, Boumezrag assumed supreme leadership, conducting audacious raids across the Aurès and northern Sahara for months. Captured in 1872, he was sentenced to death, commuted to forced labor in the penal colony of New Caledonia, where he spent three decades before returning to die on his native Algerian soil in 1905.
