Archival Overview
The charismatic founder, lead singer, and lyrical soul of the legendary group Nass El Ghiwane whose raspy, electrifying voice and songs like 'Siniya' sparked the 'Rolling Stones of the Arab World'.
Biographical Record
Boujemâa Hgour, known throughout the Maghreb simply as 'Boujmaâ', grew up in the proletarian shantytown of Hay Mohammadi in Casablanca. Working with Tayeb Saddiki's theater troupe, he co-founded the musical group Nass El Ghiwane in 1970 with Larbi Batma and Omar Sayed.
Boujmaâ played the Algerian mandole and sang with raw, incandescent vocal intensity. His masterpiece 'Es-Siniya' (The Tea Tray) captured the anguish, solidarity, and hope of Moroccan youth. His tragic passing at age thirty in 1974 turned him into an eternal myth of North African youth rebellion.
