Biographical Record
Ahmed Boughera El Ouafi (1898–1959) was born in the desert oasis of Ouled Djellal in the Sahara. Drafted into the French colonial army during World War I, French officers noticed his astonishing natural endurance during desert marches and entered him into military cross-country races.
On August 5, 1928, representing France at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, El Ouafi ran a masterclass tactical marathon: pacing himself modestly through the first thirty kilometers, he stormed from behind in the final five kilometers to overtake Chilean leader Plaza, winning the Olympic Gold Medal in 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 57 seconds. He toured the United States racing Madison Square Garden before living in modest retirement near Paris.
