"Tactical error in the crags of Adys led to an agonizing end in Roman chains."

Archival Overview

Carthaginian general who commanded troops against the Roman invasion force of Marcus Atilius Regulus at the Battle of Adys (255 BC) and was later sent as an envoy to Rome.

Biographical Record

Bostar was one of the senior generals appointed by Carthage during the dark days of the First Punic War when Roman Consul Regulus landed legions at Aspis (Kelibia) and advanced toward Tunis. At the Battle of Adys, Bostar and his colleagues were defeated due to deploying their cavalry and war elephants on rocky hills where they could not maneuver.

Later sent to Rome as a high-ranking hostage alongside Hamilcar following Regulus's mission, Bostar died in Roman custody, reputedly mistreated by Regulus's vengeful family in retaliation for Regulus's death in Carthage.
