Boris Nemtsov

Boris Yefimovich Nemtsov was born in Sochi. A brilliant theoretical physicist specializing in radiophysics and thermodynamics, he earned his doctorate at age twenty-five. With the advent of Perestroika, Nemtsov entered politics as an environmental activist opposing the construction of a nuclear power plant near Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod). Appointed Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in 1991, he transformed the region into a laboratory of successful market and democratic reforms, earning national admiration.

Appointed First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia by President Boris Yeltsin in 1997, Nemtsov championed fiscal transparency, challenged the burgeoning oligarchic monopolies, and was widely regarded as Yeltsin's prospective successor. However, following the 1998 financial crisis and Vladimir Putin's ascent to power, Nemtsov broke decisively with the Kremlin to champion liberal democracy, judicial independence, and uncompromised civic freedoms.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Nemtsov co-founded the opposition movements Solidarnost and the Republican Party of Russia – People's Freedom Party (RPR-PARNAS). He authored a series of incisive white papers exposing high-level state corruption, including Olympic infrastructure embezzlement in Sochi. In 2014, he vehemently condemned the annexation of Crimea and organized massive anti-war peace marches in Moscow. On 27 February 2015, two days before leading a scheduled anti-war demonstration, Nemtsov was gunned down on a bridge overlooking the Kremlin.
