Prominent Danish furniture designer who championed democratic, functional furniture for ordinary families, designing The Spanish Chair, Hunting Chair, and J39 Spoke-Back Chair.
Biographical Record
Børge Mogensen was born on April 13, 1914, in Aalborg. After qualifying as a cabinetmaker, he studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, internalizing Klint's human proportions and mathematical functionalism.
As head of the FDB (Danish Consumers Cooperative Society) furniture studio from 1942 to 1950, Mogensen created high-quality, affordable solid oak and beech furniture for everyday Danish homes. His 1947 J39 People's Chair and his iconic 1958 Spanish Chair, made of solid oak and thick saddle leather with broad armrests for resting a drink, became enduring hallmarks of Nordic design elegance.
