Archival Overview
King of Mauretania who allied with Julius Caesar against Pompeian forces in Africa, reuniting all of Mauretania under a single crown upon his brother Bogud's death.
Biographical Record
Bocchus II ruled eastern Mauretania while his brother Bogud governed the west. During the Roman Civil War, the brothers allied with Julius Caesar against King Juba I of Numidia and the Pompeians, launching a daring invasion of Cirta that forced Juba to divert his army.
In recognition, Caesar rewarded Bocchus with substantial Numidian territory. Following Bogud's intervention in the war between Mark Antony and Octavian, Bocchus annexed western Mauretania, ruling as sole king until his death in 33 BCE, when he bequeathed his prosperous realm to the Roman people.
