Robert Tyre 'Bobby' Jones Jr. (1902–1971) was the quintessential gentleman amateur in sporting history. Competing solely as an amateur while practicing law, Jones dominated championship golf in the 1920s, winning 13 major championships.

In 1930, Jones achieved the mythical 'Grand Slam' by winning the US Open, US Amateur, Open Championship, and British Amateur in a single calendar year—a feat never repeated. Retiring at age 28, he co-founded the Augusta National Golf Club and co-founded the Masters Tournament.
