Archival Overview
American rock musician, singer, and songwriter who played guitar and sang in Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974 bridging their British blues and pop eras, later achieving solo platinum success with 'Sentimental Lady' and 'Ebony Eyes'.
Biographical Record
Born into a Hollywood show-business family in Los Angeles, Welch joined British blues rock group Fleetwood Mac in 1971 as singer, songwriter, and guitarist following the departure of Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. Over five albums, including 'Bare Trees' and 'Mystery to Me', his melodic sensibilities helped stabilize and transform the band.
After departing Fleetwood Mac in late 1974—making way for the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks—Welch formed hard rock power trio Paris before launching a successful solo career. His 1977 debut solo album 'French Kiss' went platinum, powered by the top-ten hit remake of 'Sentimental Lady' and 'Ebony Eyes'.
