Beloved American comedian and actor dubbed "America's Dad" for portraying widowed patriarch Danny Tanner on the hit ABC sitcom Full House, host of America's Funniest Home Videos, and celebrated stand-up comedian.
Biographical Record
Robert Lane Saget was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a Jewish family. He graduated from Temple University's film school, winning a Student Academy Award in 1977 for his short documentary Through Adam's Eyes, before developing a reputation as a daring, blue-humored stand-up comic at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles.
In 1987, Saget was cast as neat-freak widower and father Danny Tanner in the ABC family sitcom Full House. Running for eight seasons, the show became an international television phenomenon, turning Saget into "America's Dad." From 1989 to 1997, he simultaneously hosted America's Funniest Home Videos, dominating Sunday evening family television. In sharp contrast to his squeaky-clean sitcom persona, Saget maintained a riotously filthy, brilliant stand-up routine, featured in the 2005 documentary The Aristocrats. He voiced the future Ted Mosby in CBS's How I Met Your Mother and dedicated decades to raising millions for the Scleroderma Research Foundation after his sister died of the disease.
