Biographical Record
Bjørnstjerne Martinius Bjørnson was born on December 8, 1832, in Kvikne, Østerdalen. Alongside Henrik Ibsen, Alexander Kielland, and Jonas Lie, he formed the iconic group known as 'The Four Greats' (De fire store) of modern Norwegian literature.
Bjørnson captured the spirit of the rural people in peasant novels like Synnøve Solbakken (1857) and En glad gut. He penned the lyrics to Norway's national anthem, Ja, vi elsker dette landet, and served as artistic director of the National Theatre in Bergen. In 1903, he became the first Scandinavian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. An ardent defender of oppressed nationalities, he campaigned tirelessly for Slovaks, Poles, and Romanians.
