Biographical Record
Born Qamaruddin Khan into a family of court musicians, Ustad Bismillah Khan (1916–2006) spent his life playing at the Kashi Vishwanath Hindu Temple on the banks of the sacred Ganges in Varanasi, personifying the syncretic Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of Indian civilization.
On the eve of India's independence on August 15, 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru invited Khan to play his shehnai at the historic Red Fort in Delhi, a tradition repeated on every Republic Day. He performed at Edinburgh, Lincoln Center, and across the globe while living in ascetic simplicity.
