Bill Shankly

William Shankly was born into a destitute coal-mining family in Glenbuck, Ayrshire, Scotland, one of ten children. He worked in the pits from age fourteen while playing junior football for the Glenbuck Cherrypickers. Signed by Carlisle United in 1932 and moving to Preston North End in 1933, Shankly established himself as a tireless, combative right-half, winning the 1938 FA Cup and earning twelve caps for Scotland.

In December 1959, Shankly took over as manager of Liverpool FC, who had been languishing in the Second Division for five years with a dilapidated stadium and inadequate training facilities at Melwood. Shankly rebuilt the club from the foundations up: he created the 'Boot Room' where coaches debated tactics over tea, insisted on an all-red kit to project psychological menace, and hung the famous 'This is Anfield' sign in the tunnel to intimidate opponents.

Under Shankly, Liverpool won promotion in 1962 and captured three First Division league championships (1964, 1966, 1973), the club's first-ever FA Cup in 1965, and their maiden European trophy, the UEFA Cup, in 1973. Deeply connected with Liverpool's working-class supporters, Shankly forged a mystical bond between the team and the Kop, creating the cultural dynasty that dominated European football for decades after his unexpected retirement in 1974.
