One of Sweden's greatest actresses whose unforgettable performances in Ingmar Bergman's 'Wild Strawberries', 'The Seventh Seal', and 'Persona' won the Cannes Best Actress Award.
Biographical Record
Berit Elisabet 'Bibi' Andersson was born on November 11, 1935, in Stockholm. Admitted to the Royal Dramatic Theatre School (Terserus and Dramaten), her luminous freshness and emotional transparency were discovered by Ingmar Bergman in a 1951 soap commercial.
Andersson starred in thirteen of Bergman's masterworks, embodying radiant youth as Sara in Wild Strawberries and Mia in The Seventh Seal. Her career reached supreme psychological complexity in Persona (1966), where her tour-de-force monologue as Nurse Alma opposite Liv Ullmann redefined modern cinematic acting. Winning the Best Actress Award at Cannes in 1958 and the Silver Bear at Berlin in 1963, she was an outspoken humanitarian and UNESCO cultural emissary.
