Biographical Record

Enchanted in childhood by a recording of Abdul Karim Khan, Bhimsen Joshi (1922–2011) ran away from home at age eleven to find a guru, wandering through Gwalior, Delhi, and Jalandhar before being accepted as a disciple by Sawai Gandharva. For years, he performed rigorous daily riyaz from dawn to dusk.

Joshi became the undisputed monarch of Hindustani classical khayal vocal music, famous for his electrifying taans, complex gamaks, and emotional depth in ragas like Yaman, Shuddha Kalyan, and Malkauns. In 1953, he founded the annual Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune.
