Biographical Record
Bhaskara II (1114–1185 CE), born in southern India, became chief astronomer of the renowned astronomical observatory in Ujjain. In 1150 CE, at age 36, he completed his magnum opus, the four-part Siddhanta Shiromani, comprising *Lilavati* (arithmetic), *Bijaganita* (algebra), *Grahaganita* (astronomy), and *Goladhyaya* (spherical trigonometry).
Bhaskaracharya formulated the *Chakravala* cyclic algorithm to solve indeterminate quadratic equations five centuries before Euler. In celestial motion, he conceived differential coefficients and demonstrated that the instantaneous velocity of a planet vanishes at its extreme orbit, directly anticipating the core theorems of differential calculus.
