"There is no cognition in the world which is not accompanied by language. All knowledge is illuminated by the Word."

Archival Overview

Sanskrit philosopher of language whose Vakyapadiya established the metaphysics of Shabda Brahman (the Word as divine ground of reality) and the semantic flash of intuition (Sphota).

Biographical Record

Bhartrihari (c. 450–510 CE) was a towering intellectual figure of classical India whose philosophical work united grammar, epistemology, and metaphysics. Living in the historic cultural capital of Ujjain, he was renowned both as a lyric poet (*Satakatraya*) and as the master philosopher of language in his seminal treatise *Vakyapadiya*.

He formulated the revolutionary doctrine of *Sphota*—the instantaneous flash of understanding whereby a listener perceives unified meaning transcending the individual sounds of syllables. For Bhartrihari, consciousness and language are inseparable: the entire cosmos is an ontological evolution of *Shabda Brahman* (the Divine Word).
