Biographical Record
Bettina Heinen-Ayech was an internationally acclaimed German painter who married Algerian nationalist engineer Abdelhamid Ayech. In 1963, immediately after independence, she moved to Guelma in eastern Algeria, falling irrevocably in love with the fiery Mediterranean landscape.
Over fifty-five years of intense plein-air watercolor and oil painting from her studio perched above Guelma, Bettina produced over 6,000 artworks capturing Mount Mahouna, the olive valleys, and harvest fields. Her works were exhibited in major museums across Europe and North Africa, cementing her legacy as Guelma's painter laureate.
