Bernardo Houssay

Bernardo Alberto Houssay (1887–1971) was a child prodigy who earned his pharmacy degree at seventeen and medicine at twenty-three. His experiments demonstrated that hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary gland antagonize insulin, proving that endocrine balance controls diabetes.

As Latin America's first Nobel laureate in the sciences, Houssay founded the Institute of Physiology at the University of Buenos Aires and established CONICET, the national scientific research council of Argentina.
