Bernard Montgomery (1887–1976) insisted on meticulous preparation, artillery superiority, and intense personal rapport with soldiers. Taking command of the demoralized Eighth Army in Egypt in 1942, his masterclass at the Second Battle of El Alamein shattered the Axis Panzer Army Africa, prompting Churchill's famous words: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat."

As commander of the 21st Army Group, he directed the initial Allied landings on D-Day (1944) and accepted the surrender of German forces in northwestern Europe at Lüneburg Heath in 1945.
