Archival Overview

Eminent Algerian nationalist leader and intellectual who succeeded Ferhat Abbas as President of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) in 1961, overseeing the Evian Accords and the proclamation of independence.

Biographical Record

Benyoucef Benkhedda (1920–2003) graduated with a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Algiers and served as Secretary-General of the PPA-MTLD. Arrested by colonial police in November 1954, he joined the FLN upon his release, working closely with Abane Ramdane and directing the strike of eight days during the 1957 Battle of Algiers.

In August 1961, Benkhedda was chosen as President of the GPRA. With profound political wisdom and diplomatic poise, he steered the final, volatile negotiations with Charles de Gaulle's government, culminating in the March 1962 Evian Accords. On July 3, 1962, President Benkhedda officially proclaimed the independence of free Algeria.
