Biographical Record
Cheikh Benyahia al-Boussaadi was a renowned educator, jurist, and mystic from the oasis city of Bou Saâda. Partnering with Cheikh Mohamed Ben Belkacem, he played an essential role in establishing the prestigious Zawiya of El Hamel in 1862, turning a small mountain village into the foremost intellectual sanctuary of southern Algeria.
Benyahia taught jurisprudence, Arabic philology, and spiritual ethics, personally instructing both male and female scholars—including Lalla Zaynab. His educational curriculum preserved Algerian Arabic and Islamic heritage in the face of colonial cultural assimilation.
