Biographical Record
Bartolomé Maximiliano 'Benny' Moré was born in Santa Isabel de las Lajas on August 24, 1919, a direct descendant of the Congolese king Gundo. Moving to Havana with his guitar, he sang in bars before traveling to Mexico with the Conjunto Matamoros, performing with Pérez Prado.
In 1953, he assembled his legendary 21-piece 'Banda Gigante'. Though unable to read musical notation, Benny personally arranged every instrument by ear, conducting with his cane and dancing across the stage. Hits like 'Bonito y Sabroso', 'Qué bueno baila usted', and 'Santa Isabel de las Lajas' remain timeless monuments of Latin music.
