Biographical Record
Benito Juárez was a Mexican lawyer and statesman who served as the 26th president of Mexico from 1858 until his death in 1872. Of indigenous Zapotec origin, he championed the liberal Reform laws separating Church and State, defeated the French invasion and the puppet empire of Maximilian I, and restored the sovereign Mexican Republic.
