Archival Overview
First physician-martyr of the Algerian Revolution, who used his medical clinic in Tlemcen to heal wounded fighters and run clandestine printing presses for the ALN.
Biographical Record
Dr. Benaouda Benzerdjeb was born in Tlemcen and earned his medical doctorate with high honors from the University of Montpellier in 1948. Returning to open a private clinic in Tlemcen, he provided free medical treatment to destitute Algerian families while secretly joining the Special Organization and the FLN.
Benzerdjeb used his clinic to stockpile antibiotics, surgical equipment, and blood plasma for the ALN maquis in the Trara and Fillaoucene mountains, and operated a mimeograph machine printing revolutionary tracts. Arrested in January 1956, he was taken to Oued Chouly and executed, sparking a historic general strike across Tlemcen.
