Biographical Record
Begum Hazrat Mahal was the second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh. Following the British East India Company's illegal annexation of Awadh in 1856 and her husband's exile to Calcutta, she took charge of the kingdom on behalf of her young son, Birjis Qadr.
During the Rebellion of 1857, she mobilized Hindu and Muslim sepoy units, capturing Lucknow and holding the British garrison under siege for months. Refusing all British offers of amnesty and royal pension, she chose asylum and exile in Nepal where she died an unvanquished rebel.
