Biographical Record

Bedřich Smetana was the pioneer of Czech national music. Devoted to Czech patriotic liberation from Austrian Habsburg cultural hegemony, he directed the Provisional Theatre in Prague and dedicated his art to creating an authentic national operatic and symphonic voice.

In 1866, he achieved international triumph with his comic folk opera 'The Bartered Bride' (Prodaná nevěsta). In 1874, Smetana suddenly lost his hearing completely. Undaunted by total deafness, he composed his monumental six-part symphonic poem cycle 'Má vlast' (My Country), containing the immortal, flowing orchestral masterpiece 'Vltava' (The Moldau).
