Biographical Record
An alumnus of Sadiki College and the École Coloniale in Paris, Béchir Sfar dedicated his life to reforming the educational architecture of Tunisia. In 1896, he founded the Khaldounia, the first modern bilingual cultural institute in Tunisia, providing students of Al-Zaytuna with access to modern sciences, geography, and European languages.
Sfar emerged as the intellectual father of the Young Tunisians, delivering rousing public addresses on economic emancipation, industrial vocational training, and civic equality before French authorities exiled him to rural provincial governorships in an attempt to mute his influence.
